Review — pandemic edition:
While many businesses either temporarily or permanently closed, Coma managed to grow. They survived 2020 with curbside pick up and carry out service. Now they're starting 2021 by moving to a new, larger space (which used to be Blue Sky Bar) in the same building. I peeked in the window at the construction and was most excited to spot a second floor for additional seating. It’s nice to see brick and mortar success during the pandemic.
I'm not surprised to see Coma continue to grow. Since opening in 2016, they have hustled to make their presence felt in St Louis. They grew their wholesale business early on and their coffee is served in many coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. Another interesting move to differentiate themselves in the market is their emphasis on cold brew. They promote this item hard, selling it on tap, in cans, and on shirts. Last time I checked, it was also the wifi password. They take the cold brew very seriously.
I prefer Coma’s espresso drinks. They are very consistent in delivering impeccable microfoam and espresso. I think the macchiato offers the best experience of the espresso because they use a very light roast that is a little sharp on its own, but bright and fruity when cut with a bit of foam. Coma also creates interesting signature drinks that they change up regularly, like the activated charcoal cappuccino and espresso tonic.
